How to Organize your Children's Artwork Rebecca Autry Creations

September 14, 2019 by rautry

Are you overflowing with your children’s pictures and artwork? If you are like me, I am keeping my children’s artwork and homework. If I didn’t have a particular reason for keeping it all, I would tell you choose a couple of pieces every few weeks to hold onto and follow this system to help you keep those piles organized.

How to Organize your Children’s Artwork

So now onto why I am keeping my kids artwork and homework; about a year ago my oldest son was having some minor issues in his preschool class. The teacher suggested we get him some assistance or at least check with our family doctor. Well after a few months we finally did. We didn’t think anything was going on with our son but that he was just shy and not a big participator in his class, but as we were able to observe him in his class we noticed a big difference between him and the rest of the kids.

At this time in our lives we are getting Speech therapy – receptive learning for him and so for us it is imperative to keep every single homework or artwork for the next year so we can see if there is any progress. So here is how I have found to organize all those papers and will be so easy for us to go back each week by week to see his progress.

So let’s get started.

7 Steps to Organize your Child’s Artwork

1. Get a 2-3inch Binder for each kid. To make it easier color coordinates by their favorite color. You may want to do one binder per year or for every 6 months depending on how much you are saving.

2. Get page protectors. You will want one page protector for each week for each kid per school year. You can purchase a pack of 10 protectors from Dollar Tree for $1 or get 200 for under $12 on Amazon.

3. Label each binder with the child’s name. We’ve had problems with the school system getting our two boys mixed up so be sure to label each binder with your child’s name. Add a picture of the child to the inside of the binder!

4. Let each child decorate their own Binder. Let them use stickers, or color markers if using a white binder. This will help them get excited about keep their school work organized and will become a routine. Let’s help our kids learn good organization skills as they are younger.

5. Label each Weekly Page Protector. Make sure to Label each page protector with each week date. You will want to do this for all the weeks of the school year and don’t wait to label each week as it comes. Make sure to have a school calendar so you know when their breaks and start and finish dates of the school year.

6. File projects and paperwork as soon as it come in the house. As projects and papers come in immediately put them in the sleeve protector for that week and don’t let them pile up on the kitchen table. If you don’t do them right away it takes a lot longer to try and organize them later.

7. Determine how you will store the Binders. Will you be putting them all on a bookshelf or just the ones for the current year while you store the others in plastic bins? Make sure you have a plan in mind where you will be storing them. Having the plastic bins is a great way to start organizing other items for each child you want to save for them when they get older like their first outfit or first toy, etc. Placing these binders in there will allow them to decide if they want to keep them or not. Be sure after the end of the school year you put away the binder and start getting the new one for the next year ready. Save some time and be prepared.

How to save on Wedding Programs

September 14, 2019 by rautry

Yes this is still one small cost of the whole wedding but
you can still save a few bucks by being creative. Programs can be very simple.

If you don’t have to worry about cost then go ahead and order from a wedding program site but do make sure you have everything spelled

correctly or it can get costly for reprints.

Only order enough that you know you will need. Order the amount of guests confirmed plus ten. Not everyone who confirms attendance will show up but you will have a few who come who didn’t RSVP and you want to make sure you have some for your scrapbook or wedding album. You will also want some for those guests who are unable to make it that are dear to you like

grandparents, etc.

One way to have nice programs but not costing too much consider getting programs from Michael’s or AC Moore’s and printing them yourself or taking them over to Walgreens or Wal-mart and having them printed.

Be sure to shop around for the best print per copy price.

Be sure to start early and plan, plan, plan so you won’t
stress out later.

Hope this helps giving you some suggestions on how to save
some money.

9+ Simple Home Hacks Rebecca Autry Creations

September 14, 2019 by rautry

Do you feel your home is out of sorts? I know my home gets out of sorts all the time. I admit, I pretty much am a slob. I had to get control of my house. We have been in our home for just over a year. I admit we had more stuff then we really needed and for the first few months we evaluated what we needed and what we didn’t. I thought that if I had a place for everything I wouldn’t need to get rid of anything. That simply wasn’t true. Check out how I quickly de-cluttered. These 9+ Simple Home Hacks were ideas I used to help get our home organized. I had to learn that if everything of that like kind did not fit in these areas than I had to re-evaluate if I really needed everything.

9+ Simple Home Hacks

Shoe Organizer Door

I used a staple gun and attached this shoe organizer to the inside of my hallway linen closet. In here I placed our extra toiletry items that don’t necessarily need to have in the bathroom where the kids can get into them. My kids are getting older and know better but I am still pretty cautious.

We have the following items:

  • Bar Soap
  • Tooth Brushes
  • Tooth Paste
  • Finger nail clippers, tweezers, wet ones
  • Wash Clothes
  • Band Aids
  • Sunscreen
  • Medicine (Top sleeves)
  • Hair Brushes and combs

Inside Closet Jewelry

In my daughters room, first off its a smaller room but that’s ok, she is the only girl and doesn’t share a room. She has a deep closet so I decided to utilize the inside of her closet. On the one side we have a shoe holder which is great for her play dress up shoes and flip flops. On the other side we found this jewelry holder at Goodwill. The Goodwill I found this at, you pay by the pound so we paid maybe a quarter for it.

I hung all her jewelry. She has tons of play jewelry and real jewelry.

You can get this jewelry hanger on Amazon.

Paper Door organizer

I was given a paper organizer that I stapled to the inside my living room closet. When I put it up it was the towards the end of the school year so I originally placed the papers that came home in each sleeve from my kids. By the last day of school the holders were so full. I had to de-clutter the papers. I eventually removed the papers and had to think how would this paper organizer benefit me and my family. There are six slots so I eventually created a slot for each kids with their summer reading logs and math packets. If they complete them they get ice-cream and game/popcorn time when they return to school.

The remaining three, I divided it up between my three kids. Each one has a pouch that holds the papers and certificates they wanted to keep. This limited the amount of paper hanging out each of the pouches.

Kitchen Hooks

I took hooks from Dollar Tree and screwed them into the bottom of the cabinet near my stove. I don’t have much counter space or cabinets so I created an area to hang my cooking utensils. They hang at the back of my cabinets near the wall.

Kitchen Bookshelves

I have a small kitchen but it lacks cabinet space so I created my own storage. I found two white bookshelves from Habitat for Humanity Re-store Store for $10 each. They are pretty tall bookshelves for me! Needless to say I put my cups and bowls there. They are at eye level for my kids. On one of the bookshelves has boxed goods and cereal, breads and cookies.

Dollar Tree Plastic Storage

On my kitchen bookshelves I got plastic storage containers for my cereals and plastic containers for my food items I need to pour like sugar, beans, rice, potato flakes, noodles, etc. There are many plastic storage containers you can find at Dollar Tree for many uses. My kids have the mini tubs that house their toys into categories; animals, people, cars, furniture, dolls, LEGOs, Pony, etc.

Cabinet and Sink holder

I found a couple door holders that you screw onto the inside of your cabinets. I placed on inside my bathroom cabinet to create place for smaller tubes like toothpaste, lotions, sprays, etc.

Use paper/magazine holders along with Dollar Tree hooks to place on the inside of your cabinet doors like I used under my kitchen sink. These hold me cleaning supplies on one side and the other door I have my Aluminium foil, Saran Wrap, paper lunch bags, etc.

Inside closet bag holder

I got some hooks from Dollar Tree these can be found in the automotive/houseware isle. They are the individual hooks that can be screwed into places. I screwed 3 into the side of the wall inside my Living Room closet and hung my kids book bags. This was done for the summer while the kids are out of school. Normally my kids hang their book bags just inside from the front door during the school year.

Living Room Bookshelf/End Table

I have a smaller living room that doesn’t have much of an entry way from the front door. I needed a place for our shoes as we come in the house. Since its a small living room I can’t exactly have traditional end tables. I found this thin bookshelf at a Thrift Store for $5. It works perfect for both an end table and has three shelves we can put our shoes and house slippers at that are in season.

Living Room Closet Shoe Racks

I have wire shelves I think I got them at a yard sale, I can’t remember but I didn’t pay much for them. They are the ones that you can connect by stacking. I have 2 which gives me room for 3 areas for shoes that are out of season like boots or flip flops depending on the season.

Closet scarf holder

Technically this holder is suppose to go over the door, but I screwed it into the side of my closet and using the hooks to hold scarfs and gloves as well as the extra jackets.

Dresser Side elastic Toy Holder

Yes I did staple elastic to the side of my boys dresser. Here is why! First the dresser was free to me. Its solid but dark brown. It is a functional dresser but nothing special. My boys have what I call their Toy Weapons, mostly Light Saber and Swords. They do have a couple Nerf Guns. There is really no good area in their room to put them. I tried the closet but then they get moved around and just being shifted from one place to another. Have the elastic helps them stay in place.

Closet clothes holder

I stapled the clothes holders into my hallway closet, that houses our cleaning items and toiletries. Instead of clothes in the holder I rolled up our towels and put them in the holders. I also put a few open toilet paper rolls in some of the sleeves.

10 Ways to help lessen stress of a move

September 14, 2019 by rautry

Ok first off I am no expert about moving what way is wrong or the right way. I do know everyone is different and even though these tips help me lessen the stress during a move.

1. Pack Slowly. Yes I know not everyone has the luxury of knowing when they will move and having lots of time to move but set a daily or weekly goal for yourself and stick to it. I made a goal of packing 5 boxes each day and getting rid of atleast 5 items per day that I dont need or have used for the past year.

2. Paperwork. You will have tons of paperwork items you will need to keep track of including utility bills, rent/mortgage leases. etc. Get a folder and start putting all the paperwork in one area.

3. Make a list of phone numbers. There is no doubt you will have phone numbers you will need to call during the process of moving so get a pen and paper and start a list of all the numbers you might need like realtor, lease agent, insurance agent, utilities, schools, transportation, and so on. Save time later on from having to search for the numbers make it easier on yourself.

4. Make a list of To Do Items. This may seem corny but it really helps me.Make a list of what you need to pack including your first box to open, Last/first week of clothes you will wear so all other stuff can be packed.

5. Wash everything. This may seem like a no brainer but I have seen people pack items that havent been washed or cleaned before packing them. You will want to wipe everything once you unpack but for clothes atleast you know you can put them away right away. This helps with mold and any other yucky stuff that might come about from packing unclean items!

6. Label your boxes. If you are like my family then you may be doing all the packing yourself since its cheaper and unlikely you are moving paid for by a business. Label your boxes as you pack. I am horrible about this but in our current situation we are in a hurry to pack plus we dont have as much as we normally have had in the past. If you have friends helping you move then the labels will help them figure out where the boxes need to go.

7. Call Utilities Companies. Once you know your new address and you are for sure start calling the utility companies and getting services turned on for your desired date. Also close accounts on desired date for your current place. If you have your handy list you made with all those phone numbers it will make it much easier for you to get them all done at once.

8. Change your address. Go to your state DMV website and change your address as soon as you know your new address. Also be sure to print out the form for voter registration.

9. Make a list of items you need to get. It is inevitable you will need to get items for your new place that you didnt need in your current place. For example our current place has a built in microwave so we gave ours away. But our new place doesnt have one and with small kids I really rely on having a microwave. Other items you may need to get are shower curtain liners, hooks, etc.

10. Double check all your utilities. Just to be on the safe side consider double checking the week of your move with all your utlities that the date to turn on and turn off are still valid.

Hope these suggestions will help you lessen some stress from your nex move.

Brides Saving Money: Budget a Wedding

September 14, 2019 by rautry

Hello Everyone!

I suppose I should introduce myself.  My name is Mary and I am not a mom saving money…but I am a bride saving money!  Or a future bride that is.  I became engaged a little over a month ago to Rebecca’s brother in law and have been thrown head first into the wedding industry.

The very first thing I learned was:

Weddings. Are. Expensive.

I mean, I suppose you could figure that out on your own.  But seriously, weddings are ridiculously expensive.  And, as any good bride will tell you, when someone hears it’s a wedding the price goes up.  So in a world of 20,000 dollar weddings, how do we keep both our checkbooks, and ourselves, sane?  Well whether you’re a mom saving money or a bride saving money…

Budget. Budget. Budget.

I could say it again, but I won’t. Decide on a strict budget regardless of how high or how low it is.  And leave some wiggle room for extra expenses that may arise.  I have created over 4 different wedding budgets in less than a month and I keep editing them as I go along.  Each venue that I’m interested I create a column on an excel spreadsheet and budget out money for.   It looks something like this:

Wedding Venue and Budget

This also helps decide on where I want to have the venue!  For instance, if photography is SUPER important to me but one of the venues is too expensive to allow me enough for high quality photos, I nix that venue. You should talk with your partner to figure out what you want to spend the most money on, and work your budget around that!

Once you’ve figured out your venue/budget outline, keep track of all (and here I mean ALL, those little purchases add up!) the money you spend with Rebecca’s template: https://momssavingmoney.com/free-wedding-planning-budget-checklist-printable/

[Hint: After while I got sick of writing out the cost of separate bouquets and chairs, and tents, etc, so I just group those together.  If you get an estimated budget/quote to rent all the tables, chairs, tent, dance floor, etc., than you can just put that in one of the rows and keep the others blank]

Clearly if you’re reading this post you want to budget – the question then becomes how you cut costs!  Well, I hope to share with you cost cutting tips and tricks as I go through this process.  I have read all the wedding blogs and every website in the book dedicated to weddings, but even then I’m learning things that no one seems to tell you (like that a backyard wedding can actually be MORE expensive than a venue)!  And that is what I’ll be sharing with you!

So how about you?  What are your biggest concerns when budgeting for a wedding? What topics are the most important to address?

Until next time!

Mary

Digital way to Save your Kids Projects Rebecca Autry Creations

September 14, 2019 by rautry

Don’t get stuck with every single paper your kid comes home with!!! Let me show you a way to digitally save papers your kids bring home so your tower doesn’t start to pile up.

Digital way to save your kids Projects

As the school year begins papers and projects will be flowing in steadily learn a digital way to save your kids projects.

Don’t make the mistake I did. Take control now and save yourself time and space. My boys have speech delays and as a concerned parent, I want to make sure my kids get the best services they can so I kept EVERY and YES I mean EVERY paper, project and art piece.

But after 1 school year I have a Huge Box and 3 Binders full of paper from my son. YIKES is right! Well my reasoning for keeping everything, is because I kept things when I was growing up, but also I wanted to see the progress my kids are making over the year.

Well, please don’t make this same mistake. There is a much easier way to keep those images of their work, but not in paper form.

  1. Simply Scan their papers and projects each week using your printer/scanner.
  2. Save as a PDF and make a folder or even a DVD+RW to place all the images on. This way you still have the memories of their work, but its not taking a lot of room up. I’m not saying throw out all their paperwork. Keep those that mean a lot to you and them, just be careful not to over indulge and keep tons!
  3. Also another creative way to display their art each week is pick one item each week to display on the frig. I have 3 kids so 1 for each is enough and doesn’t clutter my frig. Display it for a week and then pick a new one for the next week.
  4. You can keep these special projects in a Binder.

Creative Extra Storage Cabinet Space that is Cheap to Create

September 14, 2019 by rautry

Have a small kitchen with hardly any cabinets or storage? Here is a creative way to get extra cabinet storage for your small kitchen or any kitchen of any size.

SEE ALSO:

Extra Cabinet Storage

Very simple and cost less than $2.

The hooks are from Dollar Tree and come in a 9 pack for $1. They have the sticky backs and all you need to do is remove the protective paper and just press them where you want them. Let them sit for a couple of hours before hanging anything on them.

I got the magazine holder from a Salvation Army for 50 cents, but you can also find them at Dollar Tree for $1. Make sure you get the ones that can hook on the hooks. Magazine holders come in a variety of designs and colors. Keep an eye out at Thrift Stores or yard sales.

I liked the big holes and even used one to place the trash bag roll with the end pulled through one of the holes to easily pull them and tear off as I need them.

What creative storage idea do you have in your kitchen? Leave me a comment below with your ideas. If you liked this post be sure to share and like.

10 organization hacks for your kids bedroom

September 14, 2019 by rautry

Can’t walk through your children’s room without stepping on something? I feel you, it is a constant struggle with my children to keeping their rooms clean. We even created a summer chore schedule before any electronics can be turned on! It kinda worked, but by afternoon there is no walkway to be seen! Below are ways to organize your kids bedroom for real people like our family. Most of the ideas are creative ways to use products from Dollar Tree that works for us.

10 ways to organize your kids bedroom

1. Closets. Be wise with your closet space.

  • Use the hanging organizers to have more storage.
  • Use shelving units add more areas to use.
  • Use the back of the doors to hangs items.
  • Place the plastic single drawers at the bottom of a closet.
  • If you have room, create a double hanging area for smaller closets.
  • Use Shoe organizers for the sides of closets if they are deep.

2. Toy boxes. If you need an inexpensive way for toy boxes get the plastic storage containers for $5 it beats the $20 plus toy boxes and works just as good.

We have purchased many containers from Dollar Tree in the colors my kids like and those have lasted quite a bit.

3. Need Shelves. We invested in containers from Dollar Tree that fit my children’s chapter books in nicely. We have them lined on the dresser. Great thing is you can stack them on each other.

4. Drawers.  Get section dividers or make your own, but be wise about what belongs in each drawer. In my daughters room her drawer we labeled ‘Bottoms’ contains a bin for her socks, tights and leggings and another for dress shorts and underwear. These work great when she has to put her clothes away. She keeps them organized and has no excuse not knowing which items belongs in its container. They are bins found at Dollar Tree.

5. Hooks. Use hooks behind doors in closets or even from the ceiling to hold coats, scarfs, toys and much more, a great way to de-cluttering the floor and keep organized. We have the kids medals and ribbons hanging from hooks in the kids rooms.

I have become a hook queen! really ask my children. Not only do we have hooks inside most of the closets, we have them in various places of the rooms including my kitchen where I have hung them below my upper cabinet to hang cooking utensils. Hooks can be purchased at Dollar Tree. Go a little crazy with hooks, they are a great invention.

6. Under the bed. You can find many containers that fit perfectly under beds to which you can store winter or summer clothing or even sentimental items. Just be sure you pack neatly and keep organized. Also be sure label to make it easier to find items.

I can’t stress enough, Label, label, label. Save yourself some time by labeling your containers, especially if they are not clear. No need to continually open and rummage through because you thought something might be in there.

7. Behind the door. There are all kinds of different door organizers that are great for kids rooms and to keep smaller items organized. We have a Shoe pocket organizer on the back of my daughters door. She houses her Barbie’s there. Behind my boys door is a card holder that fits their Pokemon Cards. They don’t show up on the floor anymore! The great thing is they are displayed side by side and easier to look at. You can also used the card sleeves for a binder.

You might be interested to see my Pokemon Go Party Ideas if you are planning a party soon!

8. Bookshelves. Bookshelves don’t just have to be for books you can also use to display toys or other important items to have in the kids room, like a piggy bank.

My boys have one bookshelf that has books on it but we got the stack-able shelves from dollar tree and now to the side of the books on the shelf they have a place to put small odds and ends, one of the shelf bin holds their pencils and color pencils.

9. Hampers. There are many theme looking hampers that are not sore to the eye, but are very practical to any kids room? So we have gone through may variations of hampers in the kids rooms but we ultimately decided what works best for our family is to have the kids take their clothes after getting showered and dressed to the laundry room. In there we have laundry bags labeled with their Initial. We know that when a bag is full its enough for a load. This helps us keep dirty clothes out of the kids room and semi-prepped for laundry.

We did try the laundry bags hanging on the backs of the kids doors. It work so well for us, it might for you. Having the plastic hamper didn’t work either, clothes would end up piled on top, plus when it was full that was more than 1 load, it got out of hand and just didn’t work for us.

10. Have a place for everything. Most importantly if you don’t have a place for everything on your child’s room then you need to consider what needs to be gotten rid of or stored elsewhere. Like Nony from A Slob Come Clean she talks about the container rule. It was eye opening for me too. If you have more items than fit in your designated container, Don’t go and buy another container. Organize what you have in level of importance to you. Then one by one place them back into the container and those that are not as important will be last and if you don’t have room consider donating them. Live within the container means. It is hard at first but believe me if you have a place for everything it will help you stay organize and help your kids.

How to Save Money on Wedding Cakes

September 14, 2019 by rautry

Part 3 – Wedding Cakes

– Your cake doesn’t actually have to be a wedding cake. Consider making it yourself or have a friend make it for you. Also consider ordering a sheet cake for about $20 from the nearest grocery store.

– Most brides or family or even guests will not remember what your cake tastes like so why not forgo the traditional cake and get something fun and tasty!

– Live a little and make your own. With coupons you can get several Duncan Donuts or Betty Crocker Cake Mixes for free with the right sales. Butter crème frosting thickens well and molds nicely into shapes.

– If you make your own make sure you practice so the real one comes out really nicely.

– If you do go with a traditional wedding cake consider asking for the window displays which get thrown out anyway. Also check to see the week of if any cancellations have come in, often time you can get the cake for half the original price.

–  Be sure to plan out what kind and what type you want. Collect pictures and make a notebook of them all so you can see a theme arise and helps you be more selective.

*Hope this helps save some money and if you have any tips about Cakes please post in the comment section or email momssaving1@gmail.com

10 Ways to help organize a Kitchen

September 14, 2019 by rautry

Have you ever seen Mrs. Doubtfire? In the movie, Mrs. Doubtfire looks through the cabinets and looks at all the labeling of the cans and the seasonings. Well we aren’t going to that extreme, but we are going to give you 10 Ways to help organize a kitchen.

10 Ways to help organize a Kitchen

1. You’ll need a pen and paper. As you sort thru your kitchen write down general categories of items you have to help you sort by those categories, i.e. Storage containers, pots and pans, bake ware and so forth.

See Also:

Free Kitchen Checklist printable that will help you take inventory of your kitchen.

Jot down your weekly menu with this FREE Weekly Menu Printable.

2. Toss, keep, sell. Always start with three main categories these will help you get organized pretty quickly. As soon as you have a good size toss pile get rid of it immodestly so you don’t think about it and it’s out.

3. Get ziploc bags. When you sort thru the smaller items in your drawers use ziploc baggies so you can easily put everything away if you have to stop in the middle of your organizing adventure.

4. Keep like items together. When you go to put everything away be sure each section has all like items together i.e. Lids go with lids, all canned food in the same general area, all boxed food together.

5. Place wisely. Really pay attention to how things work in your home. Heavily used dishes go closest to the dishwasher/sink area. Larger bake ware that is seldom used is placed in the bottom cupboards towards the back. Canned food or food that is used slot is closest to the oven and stove. Medicine is kept near the sink above and out of reach from my kids (I recently moved them to a hallway closet where we stapled a shoe organizer to the inside of the door, medicine is placed up high and out of reach). Only you will know what works for your family so be sure to pay attention to what works for you and you may need to change it around a few times until it works for you.

6. Reuse items. Often the best money saving organization is reusing boxes or jar for help with organizing spices, toothpicks, straws, plastic utensils and so forth, no need to buy special items unless you want them.

7. Keep what you use. Be honest with yourself and only keep what you actually use. The biggest downfall for my family is I keep items that we haven’t used for years. I’m not talking about occasional holiday items or the items you got as a gift, I’m talking about the items you have that you’ve used maybe once or twice since getting them and you have no realistic use for them anymore. We have plenty of McDonald cups that fall into this category.

8. Clean that Refrigerator. It should be a no brainier, but if it was I wouldn’t be writing it! At least once a month take some time to really clean out your frig and get rid of expired food, leftovers and food items your family will not eat. Write it down on the calendar to remind yourself. Take the extra step and add it to your calendar and have your phone remind you.

9. Keep a running list. As you go through your kitchen you will start to realize items you don’t have and items you think might help you stay organized, jot them down so you don’t forget. Keep an eye out for items in your home that you can re-purpose to use in the Kitchen.

10. Get rid of junk drawers. Ok this might be a little hard and unrealistic in many cases. You will have a drawer that has what seems to be odds and ends but here is a quick idea to stay organized. Get a separate eating utensil organizer to hold pens, pencils, scissors and so forth. If you are like me who collects box tops, Campbell soup labels and coke caps you will want scissors and a baggy on hand in a specific place to put them and have them organized quickly so you don’t have them all over. Dollar Tree has an assortment of organizational tubs that fit in drawers.
